they wanted to be filmed - and itv news duly broadcast a video of them, because they’re shits

bbc news quoted whitehall quoting police saying one of the suspects was ‘of muslim appearance’ which is all kinds of messed up.

Okay, so here’s the thing about Arya Stark.

The first book is a bit overtly like LOL SHE R TOMBOY PRINCESS!! RAD!! and I do find it heavy handed. All the same, beneath the surface, it is a bit more complex than Arya thinking dresses are dumb, sewing is dumb, etc.

Westeros is a highly militaristic, incredibly patriarchal society. Presentation of gender varies based on region- because Westeros is the size of a continent, after all- but for the most part masculinity, violence, and personal freedom/power are interlinked.

Consider the first book, where the Starks really have to start thinking about what their children are going to do. You see all the various occupations allowed for the male children of the Starks; Lord, brother of the night’s watch, knight. Even after Bran has his fall, Ned thinks about how Bran can become a priest, or a maester.

Due to her society’s values, Arya’s male relatives have many options at their disposal. And in the first book, Arya is a kid who’s at an age where she starts really engaging with the world at large. She’s curious, and wants to learn and see all kinds of things. But because she’s a woman, her life is far more constrained that her male relatives. And it’s not just Catelyn or Septa Mordane who enforce it (also, keep in mind that Septa Mordane says some awfully cruel things to Arya sometimes. Is it any wonder that Arya wants to devalue and flee from those lessons?) Ned also enforces patriarchy. He’s the one who sits her down, and kindly explains to her that one day she will marry a great lord, and her accomplishments in life will be through what her sons do. Can you imagine not even being a decade old and being told your worth is going to revolve around your male relatives?

She’s not quite old enough to unpack patriarchy/sexism (especially in a society that doesn’t really have labels for those concepts.) So needlework becomes a symbol of being tied down, while the swords of her male relatives become a symbol of freedom and choice. She still loves her female relatives, but she associates them with things that constrain her. And that’s understandable given her temperament and the society she’s grown up in.
